Package Shelf

The area behind the rear seat and under the rear window is called the package shelf. In some convertibles this is frequently a source of major damage. In this car the rear window in the convertible top was leaking badly for quite a while. The shelf had significant rust damage and the wooden rear bow for the top was rotted on one side. both will be replaced.

The owner had already cut out most of the rusted package shelf. We'll finish the job by removing the remaining edges at the factory welds and put in a new piece.

R & R the package shelf

We have removed all the bracing so access to the rear seat area is easier. With the structural strength restored, we can get by with less support while the doors are off. Here is the reason we are replacing this piece. The lower corners are rusted away.
The standing water soaked the carpeting and padding and rusted the entire bottom edge away. To get a general idea of the fit we have dropped the new piece into place for a moment. Once the remaining package shelf is removed, the factory seams are drilled for welding.
Here, under the left rear seat, we can see the junction of the heater channel, crossmember and package shelf This piece forms the front engine compartment wall so an airtight seam is needed The rear is welded across the back. A bit of grinding and we're done.
We'll be touching up some final details and then the body is off to the shop for some minor body work and some paint.
