Pickup Campers

Pickup Camper A pickup camper is a unit loaded onto, or affixed to, the bed or chassis of a pickup. The truck camper, is popular for back road journeys, accessing remote locations and family recreational camping. The fact that the camper is loaded on a truck make this combination a very versatile RV. The truck chassis can have two doors, multiples of door combinations, two wheel drive, four wheel drive, single rear wheels or dual rear wheels. These combinations can lead to a RV that has no boundaries.

Pickup campers can be hard sided, canvas sided, come with fixed roofs, pop up roofs (high/low) for more aerodynamic function on the highways. Often these camper structures have air conditioners, bathroom facilities, full kitchens and furnaces or any combinations of the before mentioned items. Because they can be removed from the truck or truck chassis, these make a normal truck into weekend warrior in minutes at very affordable price options.

Pickup campers make great weekend get aways, are excellent for small families, great for hunters on a weekend outing in the woods, but can make for a great vacation trip because of their versatility. Because they are in the back of a pickup truck, they allow for trailer to be brought along, so hookup the boat, utility trailer with the ATV's, snowmobiles or whatever your heart desires and head in which ever direction moves you.

These campers come in a variety of configurations, shapes and sizes ranging from just a few hundred pounds to over 2000 lbs and can be fit into almost any pickup truck that was ever built. There are even a few models that are so big that they come with another axle under the rear to help support the total weight. Because they fit on the back of a pickup, they can become a bit top heavy, so some extra suspension is occasionally required for the pickup to be able to handle the weight of these units. Often these units fit into the families regularly used pickup truck so there is less of a chance that the truck is neglected when not in use like some other RV's. Also these units seem less intimidating than their larger RV counterparts because the truck is driven on a normal basis, so once loaded up, they feel more normal to the driver.

Some owners of pickup campers will remove the camper from the truck once they reach their destination so they can still use the pickup for other duties. This makes the need for having a second vehicle along for sightseeing a thing of the past. The pickup camper can be used as a “cabin” at the lake or on the hunting land as they are completely self contained and can function as a RV off the pickup just as easily as on the truck.
